HOW TO PLAY THE PERFECT DRAW

How To Play The Perfect Draw.

Playing the perfect draw seems to be a common wish amongst golfers especially off the tee as it will help create more distance. In order to play a draw successfully you need to understand how to create it not to mention working hard at it on the practice tee.

With modern launch monitor technology we are no able to understand exactly what we need to do to produce the perfect draw and the secret lies with the club face and swing path relationship.

To start the golf ball to the right of target (for a right handed golfer) we need a swing path that is to the right. Now here comes the science part. The club-face is responsible for approximately 80% of the initial starting direction of the golf ball. So this means the golf ball’s initial starting direction will always be closer to the face aim than the direction of the swing path at impact.

To play the perfect draw your club-face should actually be open to your target line but closed to your swing path at impact. This will allow the ball to start right of target and curve back to finish on target.

DRAW-ARTICLE-1

One of the easiest ways to create this is to align your feet, hips and shoulders to the right of your target. This effectively will change your swing path. Now, the majority of golfers find it hard to draw the golf ball so from our experience of what works, go ahead and position your club-face pointing about at your target at set up. All you need to do now is swing in the direction where your body is aiming, you will now hopefully create that difference between you face and path and you will get that perfect draw.

DRAW-2

This will need some practice before you put it in play as we always say “don’t attempt a shot during play that you haven’t practiced.” Now get to the practice tee and start working on this. You never know when you might need it! #Takecharge

Does this work for irons as well as with the driver

    1. Andy Proudman

Hi,Thanks for the comment. Yes this applies for any of your clubs. Let us know how you get on with it.

  2. CharlieChaz15

I’ve tried this and I just seem to either pull the short way left or block it right. I’m unsure if this is down to experience( im 15 and play off 20) or down to lack of practice or another reason, any…

    1. Andy Proudman

Hi Charlie. This shot is all about practice and tweeking it so that you can produce that draw. The main thing is that you need to create a difference between the face and the path at Impact. Have a go…

  3. stilltrying

good evening I am confused as to how you can strike the ball before taking a divot Iv tried for several years but no I can not do it

  4. Sean Malone

How far apart should you legs be when hitting the driver andy

    1. Andy Proudman

Hi Sean. Great question. If you were to draw a line up from the outside of each heel, they should be wider than the hips. Enough to create some stability but also allow a good rotation.

  5. Anton

I attempted this at the range, but I either hit a push shot, or hit a hook.

    1. Andy Proudman

Hi Anton. It will take some practice doing this shot but keep going. It is about finding that middle ground between those two shots.

  6. Martin

Hi – how strong does your wrist position need to be at the top of your backswing to achieve this draw.

    1. Piers Ward

Hi Martin thanks so much for your comment. A neutral position will be fine to achieve this draw. If you get the wrist position to strong you could turn it into a hook. Hope this helps. #TakeCharge

  7. Andy Bassitt

    Andy,
Based on the “Setup” picture above, what will the ball flight here be? In my mind, the ball will start off down the Face Aim line and then draw off towards the left. Is that the case?
    I am p…

    1. Andy Proudman

Hi Andy. Thanks for the comment. To play the perfect draw yes the face needs to be right of target at impact and the path needs to be more right of that. We often get our golfers to start with the clu…

  8. Julian Ford

    Andy,

For a draw are you gripping the club so it is closed to the swing path (i.e. closing the club and then gripping it normally) or are you suggesting we hold the club as normal and present it cl…

    1. Andy

Hi Julian. Thanks for the comment and question. Yes we want the club slightly closed in the hands so this creates a difference at Impact. We do want the face open to the target to to produce the perfe…
